My friend Dennis from Sydney is currently riding across America on a more southerly route than I will be taking (see his journal here). Last Friday, in El Paso, Texas, a car knocked him off his bike. Happily, after a hospital visit and six stitches to his arm he has been able to continue his journey. The outcome could easily have been more serious. According to a press report, 369,629 people died on America's roads between 2001 and 2009. The interactive map below shows their distribution, with cyclist fatalities in green.
